Workshop Description: Not all ethical decisions are black and white. In this fast-paced, two-hour continuing education training, Ethical Gray Areas in Therapy: A Live Courtroom Debate, mental health professionals will explore real-world ethical dilemmas that don’t always have clear answers. This interactive session transforms the learning space into a mock courtroom where participants witness—and participate in—debates over challenging clinical scenarios.
Using ethical codes from social work, counseling, marriage and family therapy, and addiction treatment, the workshop highlights how professional values can sometimes conflict with legal obligations, cultural norms, or client-centered care. Participants will examine multiple perspectives on issues such as dual relationships, confidentiality, and professional boundaries in modern therapeutic settings.
During the session, selected volunteers will serve as “prosecution” and “defense” in brief ethical debates. The audience will act as the “jury,” voting on decisions and participating in reflective discussion facilitated by the trainer. This format encourages critical thinking, peer dialogue, and increased confidence in navigating ethical gray areas.
