Working With Clients Facing State Repression and Police Brutality, Presented by Zoe Webb, LMSW

In this workshop, the presenter will discuss best practices for working with clients who may be facing state repression or healing from traumatic experiences at the hands of the police. For the purpose of this presentation, we will understand state repression and political violence as strategic uses of force or coercion enacted by law enforcement agencies for a particular political purpose. You may have seen examples of this kind of repression in your own client base if you have worked with students protesting the genocide in Palestine, immigrants who have had interactions with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, anyone who has served jail time for resisting or protesting state actions, etc.

We will spend the first part of the workshop discussing forms of state repression and political violence that you may see in your caseload if you work with community organizers or people of the global majority. The second part of the workshop will cover best practices around building trust with vulnerable clients, keeping information safe and confidential, and treating forms of systemic and individual trauma.
